Back from the edge

All the ingredients were there – dismally poor opposition, the fact that we had started by looking lively and the hint of conspiracy about the corner itself. I couldn’t see either way from where I stand whether the ball took a touch before it went out or not - but all that matters is that a corner was given. I’m not sure if the Scunthorpe players decided to protest against the decision by refusing to defend the corner but that was how it looked.

The feeling at half time was that we really should be administering the humane killer to a team of Carlisle’s quality or it was time to get the road atlas out to see exactly where Forest Green is. And in the end we kept our nerve to see them off. Not a game to live long in the memory but we’re now four points off a play off place! Thinking positively is the key and donning my claret and blue tinted spectacles I can think of quite a few reasons to stay upbeat. Three points, Steve Torpey putting in another towering performance, brilliant Scott Brough, Matthew Sparrow growing in confidence. True Carlisle are a poor side, and their half time talk obviously consisted of nothing more that an instruction to spend forty five minutes time wasting to try and hang on to a point. And our defending at times was hesitant and lacked concentration. But Nathan’s back now and the confidence a win brings will do us all good. We’re not really firing on all cylinders just yet but last night was a big step in my view. And to round the evening off? Well getting home and putting on teletext to see that Sheffield United had got two late goals to keep the Mariners where they belong and Hull had come from ahead (can you do that?) to lose at home.

As far as I know the LDV trophy draw is being made this weekend on Soccer Am on Sky. With a squad the size we have we hardly need any extra games but the LDV has been enjoyable in recent years. There are apparently ten Conference sides in the first round draw, including Doncaster and Scarborough, which opens up the possibility of the chance to renew old acquaintances. Doncaster we played last year in the cup obviously but it has been a few years since we made the trip to the seaside. I can’t say I have particularly good memories of trips to Scarborough, particularly when they first got into the league. In any case the draw is on Saturday with games being played in the week commencing Monday 21st October.
