Reasons To Be Cheerful

After two more games over the bank holiday weekend I for one feel we have every reason to believe that if we can keep feeling positive then we need fear no-one this season. We played two of the top three and came away with our heads held high. Saturday’s game against York got off to the perfect start, and those of you who read this column last week will know I was dreading a slow start or worse still an early York goal. But nothing could have been further from the truth as a first minute goal settled everyone’s nerves and a woeful referee got everyone fired up. One particular decision stands out – when a goal bound shot towards us took a giant deflection to send it ballooning over the bar – only to see a goal kick awarded. At least two thousand people must have seen a cast Iron corner. But overall a cracking match and a good result.

Monday at Rushden was by no means a disgrace and we hit the bar no less than three times. Maybe we just need a bit more edge or attitude at times, to finish teams off and to treat them with (healthy and professional) disrespect. With Laws and Beagrie manager and captain this shouldn’t be a problem should it?

Overall not a bad weekend, just don’t spend too long looking at the table. The performances tell you more about the season ahead than the table at the moment. On the other hand if you are studying the tables check out our friends and neighbours Hull City. Yet to win and morale lower than a snake’s posterior. Molby says some of the team are time wasters but when you tempt a player down a few divisions with a big pay packet motivation is always going to be a problem. We’re relying on youth increasingly, because we haven’t got the money to be frank, but I think the spirit is better and spirit, on the pitch and on the terraces, is what it is all about.

Talking of our neighbours well done to the Mariners. Off to a flyer and I fancy them to take the First Division by storm this year. Surely it can only be a matter of time before they take their rightful place at the high table of European football and the likes of Real Madrid and Juventus are being entertained at Blundell Park. Time for my medication I think…
