Reasons to stay optimistic

A draw at home first match of the season? Could be worse, usually is, no need to panic. And then a draw away at Exeter on the Tuesday night. No need to panic, too early to tell, still there in the mix. Only two points after two games fair enough, but there were still some encouraging signs.

But now all of a sudden they have started to print the table in the papers and we’re already looking over our shoulders at Boston. Should we start to worry? Brian Laws doesn’t think so and he’s probably right. There are reasons to stay optimistic. For a start we’re only five points off top and four points off a play-off place. And we haven’t been playing that badly. And Torpey will be coming back into the reckoning. And perhaps most important off all we shouldn’t start worrying because basically there’s no point, worrying about it won’t change things.

What we can do which would make a difference is to stay positive and get behind the team who run out on Saturday. I’m sure there are a lot of people like myself who dread York getting an early goal on Saturday, dreading it because of what they will hear around them. My philosophy is that you have all week to have your say about the team, positive or otherwise, to anyone who’ll listen. But for ninety minutes a week - your team needs you.

Anyway it looks like it will be a long old season with so many teams operating with reduced squads. Most teams have a first eleven who can cope on their day but all bar Orient got rid of more than they signed over the summer, and they only signed two. Many had wholesale clearouts. When the injuries start to bite who knows what could happen. I’ll be taking my boots down with me from mid-November onwards.
