Away Days: Gigg Lane

Last updated : 26 August 2003 By Luke Thornhill
How many fans were at Gigg Lane?

About 600-700 in total, all of us were in good voice and humour. Bury again treated us to queuing about 50 minutes before kick-off and there seemed a lot then. Not bad for our first away game. I know we can't take that to every away game to places say Torquay, Yeovil and Bristol Rovers but if United keep playing like they did on Saturday then the people who do go will be in for a treat. As we have about six or seven away derbies then the away support could be vital.

You went last season, has the ground changed at all and what do you think to it?

The ground has not changed at all and that includes the vast hordes from Bury that stayed away. Because of Bury's financial problems you know that the little money they have will not be spent on the ground. Saying that though it is still one of the best in the lower divisions.

Was the pitch better than last season's mudbath?

Yes. Last May I think that the pitch played its part on the tactics that we employed in the game. This season it was like a billiard table. As a result we showed that we are a very good passing team and that we play good football. It's a shame that we can’t play on pitches like that every week, but still I think that is how certain teams in this division will win nearly all their matches at home this season by neglecting their pitch.

Were the three points well deserved?

Yes, very much so but as usual United know how to make us suffer. Not taking anything away from our performance on Saturday, Bury look a team on the slide. They have had experienced first team players leave for practically nothing, replacing them with untried kids and free transfers and confidence and ideas seemed low. We played as a team on Saturday especially Hayes and Torpey up front (I think losing Carruthers is not as bigger loss as some are making out). The period of play we had at the start of the second half was some of the best we have seen a United team play in a long time. If we can produce that week in week out then we will be up at the top without question. We just have to remember how to defend at set pieces and try and kill teams off when we have chance after chance, still having a dodgy linesman doesn't help!

The first and third goals were special, for different reasons, which of the three Iron goals do you reckon was the best?

I think all three in their own way showed what kind of a team we are this season. The first was a good counter-attacking move. After a Bury attack that ball was moved quickly out to Sparrow who then in turn passed to Hayes across the pitch on the half way line, (we all know you don't let Paul Hayes run at you from the half way line) after he got into their penalty area and drew all their defenders to him, a great cross to an unmarked Torpey 1-0. The second was scored after some good teamwork and pressure. If Matt Sparrow meant that as a pass to Steve Torpey then I will turn Codhead! I think that it showed that Steve Torpey has developed from being just a 'target man' to team player and I am saying that from not being his number one fan. The third again was while we were on top and bossing the game, a bad cross field pass from one of their midfield straight to Beagrie who just ran again at their defence cutting inside and hitting an unstoppable shot from all of thirty yards. We could, and should, have had more.

Finally, based on this performance do you reckon we've got a season of success to look forward to?

Yes. If we play like we did at the start of the second half then we can beat anyone. Again I think that this division will be very close with about 15 or so teams thinking that they can go up this year, so we have to be consistent but on Saturdays showing then we should all be very confident. I just hope that injuries and suspensions won’t play their part and affect us.

As always our thanks to Ben for taking part in this feature, if you're planning on travelling to Field Mill on Monday and would like to answer a few questions on your day please email awaydays@iron-bru.net.
