Away Days: York Street

What do you think of the ground then?

It’s not the best ground in the world. It is a typical non-league ground with not a lot of money spent on it, saying that though the United fans were housed in the best bit, the terracing behind the goal at least it is undercover unlike Donny, Bristol Rovers and York. You can see why they want to move!

How many fans were there, and did they make much noise?

We must have taken the best part of 1000 which, after our last two performances (v Mansfield where we were plain crap and Torquay where we were very lucky) was not bad. The second half, with the players attacking our goal, we were in full voice for most of the half. There were one or two having a go at the team after about 10-15 minutes in the first half! Why do people pay £12.50 just to start having a go when the game is just getting started. If you are going to slag the players off when it is not justified then bog off and start supporting the Codheads or Lincoln. We weren’t playing that bad, containing Boston and getting into the game. Again we had to contend with a homer for a referee. Why is it we never get one at Glanford Park?

Laws made quite a few changes to the starting lineup; do you think they were the right ones?

Why oh why did he not play this team against Mansfield. Lee Ridley again looked like one for the future playing out of position. Featherstone was perhaps having one of his best games in a claret and blue shirt. Kell (I hope he gets an extended contract) and Alex (we are going to miss him next season) controlling the midfield, in what is probably one of the best midfield pairings we have had. McLean and Torpey complementing each other up front. Apart from Lee Ridley every player was playing in the position that they are use to and it showed. The team played like one on Saturday and not like the debacle we had at Mansfield. That night Laws got it wrong, on Saturday, with all the chances we had I think he got it right!

Did Cliff Byrne look tired after playing (briefly) for the Ireland U21 side the previous night?

No not really. We saw him coming into Boston in Beagrie's Chrysler asleep in the passenger seat and not waking up until he got into the car park! Saying that though if I had gone to Ireland expecting to play a full game and only coming on for nine minutes, I would be a bit pissed off. If they knew they were going to do that then surely they could of told him not to bother?

Their goal came from a set-piece, where we have been vulnerable all season, should it have been defended better?

Yes. Whoever was marking him didn’t. Simple as that. It was the only way they were going to score all game. We have got to start sorting this out. These goals from set pieces are going to lose us valuable points as the season goes on.

Was their any doubt over the penalty decision?

No but I was surprised the referee gave it, it was the only thing he gave us all game, still I don’t think he had any choice but to give it. Nice to see Mark Greaves has lost none of his defending skills!!

The stats say we dominated them, was this the reality?

How we did not score in the second half I do not know. We must have hit both posts, the bar, the ball hitting players who did not have a clue and their keeper played the best game of his life (though trying to punch Torpey was not the best idea he had!) I have never seen us dominate a side so much and not score. You cannot blame anyone it was just one of those games. We will play worse games this season and win. Boston were very, very lucky. We seemed to be camped in their half. McLean could have had six; he probably should have had two. The second half was one of the best we have had in a long time, probably the best this season.

Do you think the goal which was ruled out should have stood?

The referee was going to give it then was talked out of it by the linesman. Featherstone was behind the line so how on earth could he of being offside. It just summed up our day. The referee or linesman must have the game down as a draw. There was no way Featherstone was offside or interfering with play he was behind the goal line on the floor, therefore off the pitch. The linesman got it very wrong, and the referee just summed up what he was like all game. One day we will either get a) a homer at Glanford Park or b) a decent referee away from home. I just hope that these two points lost are not valuable to us at the end of the season.
