Nigel Adkins, the Scunthorpe manager, has confirmed his interest in signing Brighton left-back Jim McNulty.
McNulty, 25, made three appearances for the Iron on loan at the end of last season,
A move was always likely from the moment Marcus Williams turned down the offer of a new contract at Glanford Park in favour of a move to Championship rivals Reading.
Adkins stressed that no bid has been made, but he appears likely to be back in North Lincolnshire come the start of the season.
"He's a player I like. He's one of a couple of players that I have been tracking," Adkins told BBC Radio Humberside.
"We've had no contact with Brighton. We need to get the right deal for us."
McNulty struggled to get back into the Brighton side last season after injury, meaning he was available to move to the Iron.
Speaking after the final day of the season, when he started in the 2-2 draw with Nottingham Forest, he said he would be interested in making a permanent move to the club.
