Adkins is hopeful the striker will be available to face the Saints on Saturday, as his experience and physical presence can help in United's bid for survival.
"Geoff Horsfield has not trained with the first-team squad since Thursday," said Adkins, speaking in his pre-match press conference.
"He has been doing some work with the physio department, and has been doing some jogging and running.
"We will know more tomorrow (Friday) morning to see what chance he has of being available for the weekend."
