Back to school for Laws

The UEFA Pro Licence is the mandatory qualification in all major football countries, and from 2004 onwards managers of clubs entering the Champions League will have to have the qualification.

There is little chance of Laws leading Scunthorpe into Europe, but the one-year course will see Laws taught by people like Don Howe and Bayern Munich's Director of Youth Development Werner Kern.

After an stay at Warwick University, Laws will be required to go through an overseas training and coaching visit before returning to the University for a final residential stop next summer.

Laws will study alongside former Iron manager Richard Money, now manager of AIK Solna, and international managers Stephen Constantine (India) and MArk Hughes (Wales).

England U20 coach Les Reed, who is the FA's Acting Technical Director, said: "I am really pleased to be inducting the third group of students onto the UEFA Pro Licence course. The first two courses have been very successful and the feedback from those coaches has been invaluable in refining the course.

"The FA are now close to having an all-qualified staff at FA Premier League level, and significant inroads are being made in having an all-qualified coaching profession in all leagues in this country.

"This development of a strong team of enthusiastic and highly qualified British coaches will go a long way to placing English football at the forefront of the world's game."
