"Scunthorpe are alleging we made an approach to the player before we should have done but we didn't approach the player direct, we approached his agent," said a Barnsley spokesman.

The Yorkshire club have appointed former FA compliance officer Graham Bean's Football Factors to defend the Reds.

As Iron fans may remember, ex-United associate director Bean was unsuccessful in May 2004 when he was the figurehead of a seven-man consortium aiming to take over the club.

"We will leave no stone unturned to protect the good name of Barnsley Football Club in the light of these allegations, which we intend to fight strongly and vigorously," Bean said in a statement on behalf of the Tykes.
