The video, which first appeared on YouTube features the out of work Bassett being tricked by a hoaxer- who leads Bassett to believe Nigel Adkins is going to be axed.

The prankster then discusses the possibility of an assistant manager role with the ex Leeds number two, who then whispers; "Has he got any inclination you might be sacking him?"

The bogus 'Scunthorpe official' apologises for the short notice given, but explains that Scunthorpe are desperate as they are "in a dogfight at the minute, bottom of the league."

SunSport revealed to Bassett that it was a hoax and he admitted he was caught out by the mystery caller.

"When I didn't hear from him the next day I realised it was somebody trying to lead me up the garden path. It's part and parcel of life I suppose.

"He caught me on the hop because I was in a restaurant when he rang."
