Butler has been a first-team regular since breaking into the side in September 2003, but has been restricted to just two susbtitute appearances this term after dislocating his shoulder in pre-season.

Since returning to fitness he has struggled to force himself back into the matchday squad, and made five starts on loan for local rivals Grimsby Town earlier in the season.

One of Nigel Adkins' first actions when made manager was recall the defender from the Cods, but he is willing to allow him to leave - temporarily - again later this season.

"We have had a number of other enquiries about taking Andy out on loan again, but at the moment because of the injury situation, we cannot let him go," Adkins told the Scunthorpe Telegraph.

"He has been a big player for us, but after his injury problems needs to get some games under his belt."
