Byrne, 29, has not played since January and had surgery in the summer. After light training, he stepped up to work with the rest of the squad on Monday.
"It's too soon to stick him on the bench, but we'll probably be able to give him some reserve team football at the end of the month," Iron manager Alan Knill told the club's official website.
