Eire U21 captain
Byrne is likely to captain the side in what will be his 11th U21 cap. The match is a European Championship Qualifier in Group 10, with the Eire U21s currently second bottom of their group and already out of the running for a place in the Finals.

The call up means Byrne will miss the Iron's away game at Boston a week tomorrow leaving Scunny boss Brian Laws with a bit of a headache - particularly if right back Nathan Stanton fails to recover for the game.

Laws said "It's an important game for us and although I appreciate the fact that players have to represent their country if picked, it beggars belief really why an under 21 team is playing on a Friday night.

"It has annoyed me alot when normally the Irish FA have had my full support."

The full squad is as follows:

Daniel Connor (Waterford)
Saul Deeney (Notts County)
Stephen Kelly (Tottenham Hotspur)
Clifford Byrne (Scunthorpe)
John Thompson (Nottingham Forest)
Stephen Capper (Scarborough)
Colin Cryan (Sheffield United)
