Byrne should stay until season end

Byrne is now entering his third month on loan at Glanford Park from Sunderland, and Iron manager Brian Laws is keen to extend this deal until the end of the season.

Black Cat's manager Howard Wilkinson is happy to allow him to remain in North Lincolnshire, but was looking for a call-back option to cover injuries or suspensioon at the Stadium Of Light.

However due to a recent rule change a long-term loan cannot have the option of a call-back so United must again negotiate with Sunderland in a month's time.

Laws however is not envisiaging any problems: "Now if there's no need for him to be called back after the third month, I think he will be here for the rest of the season."
