Carruthers goes AWOL

Despite verbally agreeing to stay ar Glanford Park for a further two seasons Carruthers failed to turn up for a fitness test yesterday, and now appears to have no future at the club.

Carruthers had told Iron manager Brian Laws and chairman Steve Wharton that he was prepared to stay, but has now thrown a spanner into the clubs pre-season planning.

Laws told the Scunthorpe Telegraph: "I'm very bitter. In the two years I have worked with Martin I thought we had built up a good relationship. He has gone and soured all that.

"I'm totally disgusted with him and he certainly won't receive any favours from me in the future.

"The way things have turned out has really shocked me, particularly because Martin was a player I thought a lot about.

"All I ask from my players is a bit of loyalty and I certainly haven't got that from Martin. In a way I am glad he has not signed if that's the kind of player he is."

As reported first on Iron-Bru.net third division rivals Macclesfield Town had continued to track Carruthers even after he had verbally agreed to stay with United, and his future now looks to be at the Moss Rose.

Last season he scored 20 goals in a season for the first time in his career, and was presented with a special merit award by the club.
