The chairmen want £178.5million, as agreed in the contract, paid in full whilst there are grave financial implications for the troubled company - who have asked to pay a reduced fee of just £74million.

"All the clubs are unified and we will be doing everything we can to ensure a just resolution," said league chairman Keith Harris after a meeting of every league club's chairman, including our chairman Steve Wharton, yesterday.

"The distress and instability in the football community caused by the threats not to honour the contract are affecting the clubs, their employees, the players and the supporters.

"As a result of this meeting we are calling on the senior executives of Carlton and Granada to meet us and resolve this matter."

The TV Company now look set to be sold off, or closed down completely.
