Current boss Brian Laws has had two interviews to take over at Championship side Sheffield Wednesday, and is widely expected to be named new manager of the Owls this week.
Cox moved to Crewe this summer after being released by Cardiff, signing a two-year deal.
He was born in Scunthorpe, and started his playing career at the Iron before joining Aston Villa.
