Hallam Hope, an Everton youngster, put the young Three Lions ahead after 21 minutes when he turned home a low cross.

He stabbed home a second five minutes later after some excellent pressing from John Peacock's side led to Nick Powell heading the ball into his path.

Powell could have added a third before the break when he headed tamely at the Portuguese keeper. He was one of two England players left unmarked for the impressive Liverpool youngster Raheem Sterling to find.

England created all the goalscoring opportunites and Powell made it 3-0 six minutes after the restart when he waltzed into the area before firing the ball into a bottom corner.

Portugal did pull one back, against the run of play, when Jaco Cancelo scored direct from a free-kick just outside the penalty area.

Hope fired just over, before being subbed off to deny him the chance of a hat-trick.

The game headed towards a quiet end, but the four minutes of time added on were dramatic - with both sides missing chances.

Frederic Maciel, on as a substitute for Portugal, should have done better when he got on the end of a counter-attack but the England keeper Jordan Pickford stood his ground to make a good save.

A crowd of 804 were at Glanford Park to watch the match.
