The Third Division side extended their unbeaten run to 14 matches after holding out for a 0-0 draw in the FA Cup second round replay.

Then Guylain Ndumbu-Nsungu, Robbie Mustoe and Brian Barry-Murphy all had penalties saved by the 26-year-old Doncaster-born stopper.

It was a dismal match, livened only by the occasional running of winger Ndumbu-Nsungu and the infrequent skilful contributions from Scunthorpe's Peter Beagrie.

Ndumbu-Nsungu's early burst of energy fashioned Wednesday's first opening, but his left-wing cross was wasted by Adam Proudlock who fluffed his lines from ten yards.

The young loan star was again the provider on five minutes, but this time Lloyd Owusu headed over the bar.

The 38-year-old Beagrie and Steve Torpey, Wednesday's tormenters in the first match 11 days ago, almost combined to give the third division's form team the lead in the 18th minute, but Torpey failed to get on the end of Beagrie's fizzing cross.

Ndumbu-Nsungu was becoming vital in both boxes, his last-ditch tackle on Matt Sparrow five minutes before half time denying the young winger a clear shot on goal.

He then blazed over in the 59th minute when the ball broke on the edge of the area following a swift Wednesday counter.

Owusu saw a goalbound header well-saved by Evans in the 75th minute and then he almost snatched it when his tame 89th minute effort hit the post.

As extra time approached Scunthorpe twice went close. First a deflected Paul Hayes effort fell agonisingly wide before Beagrie fired a free-kick the wrong side of the post.

But Evans' spot-kick heroics set up a third round tie at Barnsley.
