FA warn clubs on refs

The FA crackdown comes following a number of high-profile recent flashpoints in recent weeks.

Wayne Rooney's foul-mouthed tirade at referee Graham Poll in midweek followed Portsmouth midfielder Matthew Taylor confronting a linesman during their FA Cup tie with Southampton.

But referees chief Keith Hackett welcomed the FA's decision to stress the importance of avoiding confrontation with referees to its member clubs.

Hackett told The Observer: "We are trying to do a lot behind the scenes and this week the FA will meet with the League Managers' Association and the Professional Footballers' Association to discuss this issue.

"A lot can be done away from the pitch to educate players. We all have a responsibility in this matter."
