Garton's Championship dream

The Iron have spent just six years in the second tier of English football, between 1958/59 and 1963/64.

Their highest-ever league finish came in 1961/62, when they ended up fourth after controversially selling top scorer Barrie Thomas to Newcastle - effectively ending any hopes of promotion to the top fllight.

And after securing League One surivival with a point at Rotherham on Saturday, guaranteeing the highest final league position since 1966/67, Garton says the aim is to recapture the glory days of the 60s.

"We regard staying in this division as success of today, but that certainly isn't the end of the road," he told the Scunthorpe Telegraph.

"For the chairman and everyone else at the club, the ambition is Championship football at Glanford Park.

"And we will be putting in every effort to try and achieve that. It's no good now standing still and being satisfied with what we have done.

"We have got to try and push on, to make every effort we can to try and achieve a higher level."
