Goodwin: My red card was harsh

The Irish midfielder, a summer signing from Stockport, was shown a second yellow card 10 minutes from the end of Saturday's 3-1 home defeat at the hands of Brentford.

It came after he had opened the scoring eight minutes into the game, and had been one of the better players in a lacklustre Iron display.

And although Goodwin admitted he deserved his first booking for a foul on Paul Brooker - he reckoned the second yellow, for a challenge on Eddie Hutchinson, was harsh.

He said: "It was a disappointing result, especially after the great start we had - going 1-0 up early doors.

"With the first tackle I felt the ref was right to give me a yellow card, but with the second one I think he got a bit excited with the tackles that went in just before it.
"I thought I'd done alright before then, I've been out for so long through injury so to miss another game through suspension is disappointing.

"It killed the debut a bit, but I'm looking forward to the next game."

Iron manager Brian Laws gave Goodwin the option of coming off earlier in the game, but the midfielder insisted he could cope with a full 90 minutes.

It was the first match he had played in since July, when he suffered an injury in a pre-season game against Winterton Rangers.

He added: "I was delighted just to be able to pull on the Scunthorpe United jersey at last.

"I'm not match fit yet, I'm probably 75 per cent there. I've done all the cardio stuff with (physio) Nigel Adkins but it's just games now that I need.

"Laws asked me if I was okay and I said I could go for 90 minutes. I bet he wishes he took me off now!"
