Goodwin suffered a reocurrence in training this week and he will now require an exploratory operation to establish the full extent of the injury.

The Republic of Ireland international was thought to be just weeks from a comeback after being allowed to resume full training with the first team.

The 24-year-old signed from Stockport in the summer, and the ex-Hatters captain is yet to make a competetive appearance for United.

In fact, he has only made one appearance in total. That came in the 4-0 pre-season victory over Winterton Rangers in July where he picked up the injury going in for a tackle.

Iron boss Brian Laws told United's Official Website: "After the reocurrence the specialist has no option but to investigate the problem with surgery.

"This is a massive blow for Jim and the club."
