The police are investigating claims that Rochdale’s Bobby Grant used offensive language to Hoyte during the League Two encounter, which was Dagenham's annual anti-racism day.

Dagenham reported the allegation to the police and a Scotland Yard spokesman said on Sunday: “We can confirm that we have received an allegation of racial abuse in relation to the football match between Dagenham and Redbridge and Rochdale that took place on Saturday, Jan 12.”

Dagenham’s captain Abu Ogogo said after the game: “The only downer was their player apparently calling Gavin Hoyte a c**n”. I actually heard it.

"Their player could not have picked a worse day to do it on. The ref didn’t hear it and nor did the linesmen so I am not sure what is going to be done.”

Referee Steve Rushton informed the FA of the allegation.
