Hayes is expecting to leave Barnsley this summer, and speculation had suggested he had been in contact with Iron manager Nigel Adkins over a return.

The forward is out of contract at Oakwell, and expects to move on after falling out with Tykes boss Simon Davey.

"My agent has spoken to a few clubs because of my situation at Barnsley," Hayes told the Scunthorpe Telegraph.

"If Scunthorpe are interested, it would be great for me."

It would be Hayes' second spell at Glanford Park, having intially made his breakthrough in North Lincolnshire.

United took over the final year of his youth traineeship from Norwich in 2002, and he went on to score 33 goals in 115 appearances for the Iron.

He helped Scunthorpe to promotion from League One in 2004/05, but left to join Barnsley on a Bosman free transfer.

Hayes was a regular at Oakwell as the Tykes won promotion via the play-offs, but he slipped downt he pecking order this season.

He turned down a move to Leyton Orient during the January transfer window, Southend were also interested in his services but his only move was a loan one to Huddersfield Town.
