Hodges was close to joining Exeter City

Already at Exeter
Hodges joined our first division neighbours Grimsby, but his stay in Codland lasted only a day as the cash-strapped club could not afford him.

It has now come to our attention that the winger could have teamed up with former teammate Gareth Sheldon on the south coast.

The Grecians hae spent time on tour in Finland as part of their pre-season, and manager John Cornforth - another former Iron player - asked City chairman John Russell to hold talks with the player.

"Good luck to them if they're prepared to pay those sort of wages," said Russell.

"He suggested a figure that he wanted per week, we made a lower offer and he went away to think about it.

"He decided that he wanted 'x' amount of money, which was far greater than the amount we offered and far, far too much money as far as we were concerned.

"We want quality players here and Lee is a quality player but - with no disrespect to Lee - he wanted a very, very high wage even for a top Second Division club."
