The Irish centre back has agreed to join the Iron for a month on loan after being restricted to only reserve appearances at The Stadium Of Light.
The 20 year old will train with the Iron today and is expected to play some part in Saturday's match against Swansea City.
When asked about Stuart Balmer, Laws explained "We were hoping to bring him here for a second month on loan"
"It is proving very difficult for one reason or another with Oldham, so I may have to look elsewhere to try and bring someone to the club"
The signing of Byrne seems to signal that Laws has been forced to look elsewhere and so it now seems as though any deal for Balmer is dead.
