Barnsley created the best chances and might have grabbed a first-half winner but for a hat-trick of saves from Iron keeper Tom Evans - who seems to save his best form for the cup competitions and was the hero in the Second Round replay win over Sheffield Wednesday.

And when Evans was finaly beaten in the closing stages of the game Scunthorpe had the woodwork to thank for keeping out a fierce free-kick from Alex Neil

The Tykes went close after just two minutes when Craig Ireland's header was well saved by Evans and then Jonathan Walters dragged a shot from 12 yards wide of the target.

Before half time Evans turned an angled shot by Kevin Betsy round the post, and then topped it with another superb save to deny Walters after he burst through into the area.

United struggled to create a breakthrough, with Peter Beagrie providing the biggest threat from the left wing - though he took a while to adjust to the pace of the game having sat out the last two league games with a hamstring injury.

Beags came the closest to scoring for Scunthorpe, with a first half free-kick that went narrrowly over the bar.

Matty Sparrow saw a deflected shot almost find a way through, while substitute Paul Hayes saw his effort blocked.
