The striker is unnamed at the moment, but the Iron hope to complete a deal by the end of the week.

If he signs he looks set to replace Paul Hayes who has rejected the Iron's final offer of a new contract, and looks likely to join League One rivals Barnsley.

"I am in the process of talking to a striker and have made an offer to him," Laws told the Scunthorpe Telegraph.

"But I am relatively confident that we will have some positive news by the end of the week.

"All I will say is that he is currently out of contract, but was with a Championship club last season.

"He also has experience - something we need someone to have if they are replacing Paul.

"The fact that we are now in a higher league means we have to retain possession better and this player will help us do that. We already have some good young players in Andy Keogh, Michael Rankine and Andy Parton. And so that is why I want someone with a bit of experience behind them."

The most likely option is Stoke striker Chris Greenacre, though QPR's Jamie Cureton could be a possibility.

Following Hayes's likely departure, Laws is desperate not be left short up front next season like he was last time the Iron achieved promotion when John Eyre and Jamie Forrester left in 1999.

He was forced to play veteran targetman John Gayle and midfielder Wayne Graves up front on the opening day of that season, and the Iron struggled for goals.
