Brian Laws' side look poised for a top half finish, and Wharton feels te club is moving in the right direction.

Though he does admit that it could have been much more successful had the Iron performed better at Glanford Park.

They only won eight games on home turf this year and it is something the club will be looking to improve next time around.

"I think the key to all our success in the last few years has been a very good team with a good management set-up, and I've always said with Brian, Russ (Wilcox), Peter (Beagrie) and Nigel (Adkins) - you couldn't wish for a better management team. They live and breathe Scunthorpe United. The players have a teriffic team spirit and they're a great crowd to be working with," Wharton told BBC Radio Humberside.

"It could have been so much better because we had such a fantastic start, but it's going to be a high finish whatever happens.between now and the end of the season, so we've got to be happy really. They've done very, very well but it could have been so much better.

"I don't have any regrets for the season, what I do regret is the amount of injuries we've suffered.

"I think that really hurt us early on, losing key players at important times. But I have no regrets and I believe they've done us proud this year."

Meanwhile, the United chairman also paid tribute to the club's support.

"We can't be disappointed with the gates. We've averaged over 5,000, though they've dropped off since the poor run but it's still pretty good for a town the size of Scunthorpe," he added.

"I don't think we can be greedy. We're doing very well, as a percentage of the population of this area we do really well. Our fans have been teriffic. The away fans have supported is through thick and thin and are fantastic."
