Iron will host Burnley in Carling Cup

Last updated : 16 August 2003 By Luke Thornhill
United last met Burnley two years ago in the FA Cup Third Round, with the Iron pulling off a shock to knock the Lancashire side out of the cup after a replay and a penalty shootout - the match setup a Fourth Round Trip to Bolton Wanderers.

The only other times the two sides have met in the past decade were during our season in the second division, with a Guy Ipoua brace seeing Scunthorpe take the three points from our trip to Turf Moor in front of the watching SKY television cameras while the Clarets secured promotion to the First Division with a last day win after Lee Hodges had given United a first half lead.

The two sides have never met in the League Cup, but historically United have proven they have nothing to fear with eight wins from the 23 meetings in contrast to just three for Burnley.

The game will be played in the week beginning September 22.
