Despite the white Christmas that had been widely forcasted not arriving, match referee Michael Pike postponed the game in the interest of player safety due to a frozen pitch.

The match was one of four festive games in the third division which fell victim to the weather, including Hull’s visit to York, Darlington travelling to Carlisle and Lincoln’s game with Mansfield Town.

However, the games that did go ahead provided some great results for the Iron.

Table toppers Plymouth Argyle took a two goal league against local rivals Torquay United, but were pegged back leaving them on 48 points at the top of the table.

Hull City and Mansfield both fell victim of the weather so were unable to pull away from the Iron, whislt Rochdale – lying a point above the Iron in fith – crashed away at Kidderminster Harriers.

Shrewsbury Town also tasted defeat, with a 1-0 reverse at Cheltenham Town.

Hartlepool manager Chris Turner felt that the game could have gone ahead.

“From our point of view the football club did everything they could to get the game on and we wanted the game on. My opinion is that I thought that the game could have gone ahead but the final decision has to be down to the referee,” said Turner.

“I know that some people will criticise the club, but from Hartlepool United’s point of view I’d say we were 100% in the clear here.

"We wanted the game to go ahead and we wanted a decision early enough to save fans from travelling.

"The last thing we wanted was for fans to have a wasted journey like we all had at Bristol the other week. But the referee didn’t even have a doubt at twelve o’clock.
