The 26 year old only managed two starts for United this term, before he aggravated a groin problem in the Carling Cup defeat to Hartlepool.

"You do things in life and if they don't work out at first, you make them work", Iriekpen told the Scunthorpe Telegraph.

"That's what I'm going to do at Scunthorpe - make it work."

Iriekpen became a hit with the fans after his bullet header earned a point at Charlton on the opening day, the Londoner looked confident at the heart of United's defence.

He played in United's 2-0 victory over Burnley, but was substituted in the defeat to Hartlepool.

He featured in one reserve clash after that, seeing red for headbutting a Grimsby Town player infront of an angry Nigel Adkins.

"I've not been like this with injuries before" he admitted.

"It's the worst luck I've had with injuries, but hopefully it's behind me now.

"I know I can do a job at this level, but I need to get the chance to prove it"
