Johnson has told the club that he wants to join Conference National side Tamworth, and the Lambs claimed last week that he has signed a pre-contract agreement with them.

But Laws will not let the 35-year-old leave the club until it suits the Iron - which may mean he is not released until top scorer Billy Sharp returns to fitness following an ankle ligament injury.

Laws told BBC Radio Humberside: "If a player chooses to sign a pre-contract - Johnson says he hasn't - you have to believe what you hear and see it has been worded by his manager, so there is certainly a verbal agreement of some sort.

"They've asked if they can take him now, we know that he wants to go there so when the time is right we'll let him go.

"I'd be very surprised if he was here at the end of the season to be truthful, I've got to make sue we're all pulling in the right direction and can't afford to have anyone here who is distracted."
