The £100,000 signing from Sheffield United capped off a dream debut with a 71st-minute winner, giving Laws a perfect homecoming to the City Ground, where he spent a number of years as a player.

Laws said: "It could not have been a better start for Billy.

"He's a real 'Jack in the Box' and he showed that today. He's strong, he turns well and he always likes a shot. We saw everything from him.

"It was a superb goal and we could not be happier. Considering I had so many happy years at Forest as a player it was marvellous for me to come back and get a victory.

"Forest changed their formation and that gave us a few problems in the first-half, but we got to grips with things in the second-half and the longer the game went on the more it looked as though we might get a goal."

Laws' obvious delight was in sharp contrast to that of Forest boss Gary Megson though, who was bitterly disappointed with the defeat.

Megson said: "There were a lot of good things about our performance. We had plenty of possession, played good football and looked very good until we got into the final third of the field.

"Had we scored at any stage of the first-half we would have gone on to win the game comfortably but, not for the first time this season, we have failed to get what we deserved out of a game."
