21-year-old Hayes joined Barnsley on a two-year deal in early June, after rejecting the offer of a new contract at Glanford Park.

But the ex-Norwich trainee's age means the Iron are entitled to compensation, which looks likely to be decided by the Football League.

Iron boss Brian Laws told the Scunthorpe Telegraph: "The offer they have made us is a derogatory one.

"Our valuation of Paul is much higher than theirs.

"We have already sent the forms off to the Football League for a tribunal and I expect it will be held some time towards the end of July."

United are hoping for a fee of over £100,000, but are unlikely to know the actual fee until close to the start of the season.

United are also hoping for compensation from Andy Parton's move to Conference North side Stalybridge Celtic

Laws added: "I think Stalybridge believed we would let him go for nothing - but that's not the case.

"Andy has been with us since he was 14 years old and we have spent a lot of time and effort on him.

"If necessary we will go to a transfer tribunal for him and if Stalybridge get their fingers burnt then it's no-one's fault but their own."
