United spent most of the match on the back foot, conceding an early penalty and seeing midfielder Richie Ryan red carded with just 20 minutes on the clock.

The former Sunderland player was shown a straight red for violent conduct after Simon Osborn - who went on to score twice - after a late tackle from the Walsall midfielder.

Laws said: "I was disappointed because we were down to 10 men for 70 minutes and yet were the better side.

"I am making no comment on the sending off of Richie Ryan until I've seen the video.

"We've put in a lot of work and to get back to level terms was tremendous, maybe we should have settled for that.

"Walsall have potential. Paul Merson's team will play like him with a lot of heart and we got overstretched, the extra man counted in the last 15 minutes when we were over anxious."

Saddlers boss Merson said: "I'm very pleased with today, we've beaten a good side.

"Scunthorpe play football the way I like football to be played and they gave it a real go.

"We fell asleep for their goal but we started to pass it around and two world-class goals from Simon Osborn, who is a top draw player, ensured we deserved it.

"We are not a million miles away from being a good side and good sides bounce back as we have done."
