Laws hits out at slack defence

Despite the Bantams taking an early lead through Dean Windass' stunning penalty, they were 2-1 ahead after 45 minutes through Peter Beagrie's penalty and Richie Hinds' header.

Laws blasted: "We were delighted at half time because we were so much on top and we were very unlucky not to score a third goal, but one minute of madness cost us the game.

"Especially away from home we have got to play the game tight. I am more than disappointed with that 15 minute period when Bradford scored their three goals.

"It was not down to Bradford playing brilliantly – we gave them the opportunity because we dropped off.

"They were struggling in their first half, they were going into rash challenges and the crowd were turning against them. I believe if we had kept the game tight in the first 15 minute of the second half we would have won the game, but I cannot legislate for what happened.

"I told the players that Windass would be up for this game and he has scored a hattrick on this return. He has been the inspiration Bradford needed.

"Their second and third gaols were the result of sloppy defending. I though we had eradicated that – now it has come back to haunt us."

Bradford boss Colin Todd allowed Windass to take the plaudits, but insisted it was a team ethic that saw the Bantams fight back.

He said: "This was a tremendous victory – one we wanted. The game was not about Dean Windass but it was his birthday and he has come up with a hat-trick. That is just what you want.

"Although he has missed five matches his fitness levels are very good. He looks after himself and he is the hallmark of a good striker."
