Two goals from Paul Hayes, coupled with a stoppage time penalty save from recalled goalie Tommy Evans, saw United's name go into the draw for the Second Round after a tough game at Glanford Park.

Laws said: "They must be disappointed. It was as difficult a game as we have had, credit to Shrewsbury, they performed well.

"It's a great relief to get into the second round - that's been our most difficult game for a while. Credit to Shrewsbury. I thought they worked very hard and they'll be very disappointed not to be in the hat for a replay.

"We've had to ride our luck today with the windy conditions and the new ball. Our delivery from back to front was very poor. But in the FA Cup it's not about how well you've played as Shrewsbury will tell you.

"We needed some magnificent keeping from Tommy. That double save would have been replayed again and again if it was in the Premier League."

Shrewsbury player-manager Jimmy Quinn said: "We deserved to win on clear cut chances I was delighted with our play but disappointed with the goals."
