Laws: Sharp is better than Hayes

The Iron will receive that figure from League One rivals Barnsley for Hayes who plundered 20 goals last season as United won promotion from League Two, with the fee set by a tribunal this week.

Sharp has been firing on all cylinders since joining from Sheffield United for a fee that could rise upto £100,000, netting three times so far, and Laws believes the £50,000 profit made by the Iron will prove to be good business.

He had previously compared Hayes' value with that which Cardiff offered for Wycombe striker Nathan Tyson. The pacy forward was the subject of a £300,000 transfer deadline day bid from the Bluebirds last week, but that was rejected.

Laws told PA Sport: "We were never going to get what we think Paul Hayes is worth because the tribunal deals in compensation and not what we think his value is.

"So in that sense we're reasonably happy with the figure, but overall I'm delighted because we'll get £150,000 for Paul Hayes and believe we've got a better player in Billy Sharp."

When veteran targetman Steve Torpey succumbed to a hamstring injury in the Carling Cup clash with Tranmere two weeks ago, United had to throw together Sharp and fellow teenager Andy Keogh together for the visit of Southend.

In the three games they have played together the duo have flourished, forming an impressive instant understanding.

Laws added: "Both Sharp and Andy Keogh have scored three goals for us now and it's nice to see both your strikers scoring goals.

"We're delighted with the pair of them - two 19-year-olds who are only going to get better."
