Laws: We were the better side

Despite an excellent first half performance by United, Oldham took the lead on the stroke of half time through David Eyres.

However, after throwing on three substitutes United drew level on 88 minutes through Billy Sharp, whose goal meant he shared the League One Golden Boot with Southend's Freddy Eastwood.

''I'm disappointed because we were the better side in the first half and Oldham scored with just about their only shot," said Laws.

“But my players never gave up.

“Billy is an out and out scorer and he proved that again with a very good finish.

“He didn't have many chances but the lad puts them away when they do come along.

“We go home happy and satisfied with the last quarter of the season.

“We have shown play-off form in that period, let's hope we continue in the same vein next time round to push on from what we have already achieved.

“I am sure we can do a lot better next time because the players will have learned a lot from this season which has given us a good basis to work on.”

Oldham manager Ronnie Moore added: “We don't have enough winners and that has to change - it doesn't hurt them enough.

“There were one or two talking about going out afterwards and that also frustrated me.

“It was an awful game, there was no promotion or relegation at stake and the whole 90 minutes summed that up.”

“I am glad to see the back of this season, especially April which was horrendous.

“We put ourselves in with a great chance with six games to go and there are now things which have to be put right in the close season.”
