Both Tommy Johnson and Michael Rankine had chances when one on one with the Limerick 'keeper but failed to find the back of the net.

It was the home side that came closest to breaking the deadlock throughout the 90 minutes with midfielder Chris Kerins hitting the crossbar either side of the interval.

Kerins tested Paul Musselwhite's woodwork with a 12-yard volley following good work from striker Robbie Kelleher and ex-Aston Villa and Doncaster Rovers man John McGrath seven minutes from the break.

Cleveland Taylor and Richie Ryan returned to the side after being doubtful, and Ryan won all the plaudits with a man of the match display.

The Iron included two trialists with Ronan Smalle (from local Eircom U-21 side UL Aisling) on the left wing, while Anton Mannering (also from UL Aisling) started on the bench.

Iron boss Brian Laws told the club's official site: It was a good work out and we did very well against a team that has already played 24 league games.

"We looked very solid and are continuing to make steady progress which is excellent.

"We should have had two or three goals in the first half but after the break the game got stretched. Obviously I'm keeping an eye on the lack of goals but I'm not overly concerned about it at this stage. The main reason for these games is to get the players fully fit."
