McCombe lined up in a strong team, inluding Steve Stone, Mustafa Hadji Lee Hendrie, Paul Merson and Hassan Kachoul.

However he could not prevent the midland club going down 5-2 to the Shrews.

Our man at the match was Ian Evans, a Shrewsbury Town fan and editor of Shrews MAD. This is what he had to say on the match when we spoke to him late last night.

"He seemed to start quite nervous. We went 1-0 up early and this didn't help.

"He started to settle into the game more and seemed to be comfortable on the ball, starting a couple of sweeping passing moves down the pitch for Villa.

"He seemed to be enjoying the game, but struggled to contain the pace of Rodgers, Lowe and Murphy who were on fire (Lowe bagging a hat-rick and Rodgers two.)

"He was unlucky to have a very poor keeper behind him in the first half, none of the defenders seemed to have any confidence in him after he fumbled twice early on.

"He was taken off after about 65 mins after picking up a knock, but didn't seem too badly injured."
