The centre-back, 25, had to be replaced at half-time during Saturday's loss to Leeds, and the club confirmed on Thursday he had a two centimetre tear to a tendon in a foot.
He will be out for at least four weeks, with a further two possible.
United are likely to be without their two first-choice centre-backs for this weekend's trip to Hull City, with Rob Jones still out with a broken hand.
