The 20-year-old has been rewarded for a fine start to the season with a call into Nigel Worthington's squad for the European Championship qualifiers against Denmark and Spain.

They still have an outisde chance of heading to next summer's finals, though the two games are of more use to Worthington in forward planning.

Paterson is looking forward to learning from Fulham striker David Healy, who has hit 12 goals in the country's qualifying games.

"David's record is frightening and to train alongside him has been brilliant," said Paterson.

"He has made me feel very welcome as have all the other players.

"There is a lot of excitement around the squad and I cannot wait to savour the atmosphere at Windsor Park."
