Radical shirt change for next season

United currently play in a predominantly white first choice kit, with the traditional claret and blue maintained on the sides - but this has caused problems if there is a low crowd.

If pockets of the ground are not fully occupied then players struggle to distinguish between their own players and the stand meaning passes can quickly go astray.

Ironically the club chose the largely white design to counter this problem, but it is still causing some players - in particular the ageing Peter Beagrie - problems if corners of the ground are not fully occupied.

Manager Brian Laws said: "It was time for us to get a new home shirt, and the chairman asked me what design would be best for our players - I thought back to my days at Grimsby and suggested it.

"We know it will take a while to get used to, but we think the success of the team is far more important than the colours on the shirt."

Fans however have reacted with dismay to the news, our straw poll of ten season ticket holders failed to find a single supporter who backed the change.

Alan Fairman, who has been a regular at the OSG and GP for 19 years, said: "It is just another excuse to rip fans off, anyone who has ever bought a home shirt in the past will now have to go out and by a new one.

"Only a fool would have proposed this change in the first place, I really hope that the club reconsider."

The away designs will remain the same for the coming season as they were introduced in the summer, while H&L Garages will remain as sponsors.

This is not the first time that United have changed club colours, we briefly flirted with a fully white design to try and emulate the success of Leeds United in the 60s, then an all-red design before reverting to the popular claret and blue.
