The club are expecting him to be out for six to eight weeks, with manager Brian Laws considering bringing in a defender on loan - just days after allowing centre-back Jamie McCombe to join Conference club Halifax Town on loan.
Laws said: "When you lose a player of Stanton's quality it will obviously be a massive blow.
"He has had a difficult start to the season with injuries and hopefully after this he will be back to his commanding best."
