The 24-year-old has been handed a one-year deal after proving his fitness following a knee injury.

He has played more than 240 times for the Iron, scoring one goal.

The former England Youth full-back first burst onto the scene in 1998, becoming the United's youngest ever debutant, in a League game at Scarborough.

Stanton has been plagued by niggling injury problems in recent years, last appearing in the home game against Darlington on New Year's Day.

He underwent surgery on a knee injury sustained in that game.

Ironically, it was his first game back after winning his place back from Cliff Byrne.

Stanton had missed the start of the season through suspension, and found it hard to get back into the side ahead of former Ireland U-21 captain Byrne.
