Return
Stanton has missed the last few games through injury but will return to his regular right-back position, with captain Mark Jackson battling to recover from an ankle injury which kept him out of Tuesday night's Carling Cup tie against Burnley.

On-loan striker Steve MacLean, who has scored four times in six matches with the club since joining from Scottish giants Rangers, looks set to play despite a recurring knee injury.

Also likley to play a part is veteran winger Peter Beagrie, who returned to action from the subs bench against Burnley and may also have a substitute role against the Shrimpers.

United's midfield is also looking threadbare, with Alex Calvo-Garcia out with a groin strain and Ian Kilford out with a virus. Wayne Graves returned to the reserves for the win over Darlington midweek, and is in contention for a retun to the starting lineup.

Southend travel up to North Lincolnshire second bottom in the table and with just seven points to their name, and had to settle for a point against fellow strugglers Carlisle last weekend after a spirited fightback from the Cumbrians.

Left-back Dave McSweeney will miss the match through suspension, after being sent off against Hull City, with Jamie Stuart drafted into the side in his place.

Much of the Southend squad will be familiar to Iron manager Brian Laws, with Leon Constantine and Tesfaye Bramble tipped to continue their striking partnership.

Historically United have the edge, winning 11 of the 19 games between the two sides in Scunthorpe - with Southend never managing more than a point from their trips to Glanford Park.

United's biggest ever win over the Southend came last season, with a 4-1 win at Glanford Park.
