BBC Radio Humberside reports that the 24-year-old defender will sign a short-term contract, with a longer deal on the cards depending on fitness.

Stanton has made more than 240 appearances for the Iron, scoring once in the 2003 play-off semi-final defeat against Lincoln.

The former England Youth full-back first burst onto the scene in 1998, becoming the United's youngest ever debutant, in a league game at Scarborough.

Stanton has been plagued by niggling injury problems in recent years, last appearing in the home game against Darlington on New Years Day.

The player since had surgery on a knee injury, and was told to prove his fitness before the Iron could offer him a new contract.

Stanton's decision provides a big boost for manager Brian Laws, as United prepare for League One football next season.
